Abstract
1,187,893. Jointing. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 9 April, 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 16990/68. Headings B3J and B3V. [Also in Division F2] A joint between two tubes 1, 2, in which one tube, 1, has at least at its end to be joined a wall thickness greater than that of the other tube, 2, comprises on the end of tube 2 a collar or flange 5 which is pressed into at least one groove 4, or against at least one rib, at the end of tube 1 by a matching member 8 welded at 9 to the tube 1, the assembly being prestressed to maintain the clamping pressure on member 8. As shown, pre-stressing is effected by tube expander 11 with the outer sleeve 6 constrained by a collar 10. The expander elongates the tube 1 thus closing the joint and tensioning the sleeve 6. The sleeve 6 may be located within the pipes and the joint used for a nuclear reactor. Tubes of zirconium alloy are referred to, but different materials may be used for each tube. The flange 5 may be Z-shaped and formed by the tube expander.
