Abstract
An aqueous alkaline solution for cleaning metals comprises an alkali metal metaborate and an alkali metal silicate in a preferred weight ratio of Na2O:(SiO2+B2O3) of 0,9:1 to 1,9:1, a weight ratio of B2O3:SiO2 of 0,2:1 to 0,8:1, and a silicate concentration (expressed as sodium metalsilicate) of 1-20 g./l. The solution may also contain up to 10% by weight of a surface active agent such as condensates of ethylene oxide with alkyl phenols, alcohols and fatty acids. The preferred surface active agent consists of a combination of an alkyl phenol ethylene oxide condensate with 8-11 ethylene oxide units, an alkyl phenol ethylene oxide condensate with 1-3 ethylene oxide units and a fatty alcohol ethylene oxide condensate in which the fatty alcohol has 16-18 C atoms and is condensed with 50-80 ethylene oxide units. 0,0005-0,025% w/v of Ti may also be present. Specifications 560,847, 560,848, 878,307, 916,203 and U.S.A. Specification 2,874,081 are referred to.ALSO:Prior to phosphating, a metal is cleaned in an aqueous alkaline solution containing an alkali metaborate and an alkali metal silicate in a preferred weight ratio of Na2O:((SiO2 + B2O3) of between 0.9 : 1 and 1.9 : 1, a weight ratio of B2O3:SiO2 of between 0.2 : 1 and 0.8 : 1 with the concentration of the silicate expressed as sodium metasilicate between 1 and 20 g./l. The solution may also contain up to 10% by weight of a surface-active agent such as a condensate of ethylene oxide with alkyl phenols, alcohols or fatty acids. 0.0005-0.025% w./v. of Ti may also be present. The solution is sprayed on to the metal at 60-160 DEG F. The preferred surface-active agent consists of a combination of an alkyl phenol ethylene oxide condensate with 8-11 ethylene oxide units, an alkyl phenol ethylene oxide condensate with 1-3 ethylene oxide units and a fatty alcohol ethylene oxide condensate in which the fatty alcohol has 16-18 carbon atoms and there are 50-80 ethylene oxide units. Phosphating is preferably effected by spraying an acid solution of zinc phosphate of low "pointage" of e.g. 6-10 points. The solution contains a nitrite ion as accelerator and also the nitrate ion. The process is particularly applied to rimming steel. Specifications 560,847, 560,848, 878,307, 916,203 and U.S.A. Specification 2,874,081 are referred to.
