Abstract
A metal surface is cleaned by an aqueous alkaline solution containing an alkali metal metasilicate, borax and a polyoxyethylene ethanol surface-active agent, and a phosphate coating then formed on the cleaned surface (see Group II). The solution preferably contains 1-15 g/l. alkali metal metasilicate, calculated as sodium metasilicate, borax in an amount equal to one-quarter to the whole of the weight of metasilicate, and 0.1-1 g/l. of surface-active agent chosen from octyl phenol/ethylene oxide condensates having 5-8 ethylene oxide groups in each molecule, C16-C18 fatty alcohol/ethylene oxide condensates having 50-80 ethylene oxide groups in each molecule, m-methyl-p-octyl phenol/ethylene oxide condensates having 6-11 ethylene oxide groups in each molecule, and mixtures thereof. The solution is preferably applied by spraying at a temperature below 120 DEG F. Metals which may be treated are iron, steel, zinc, aluminium and copper. Specifications 865,497 and 871,606 are referred toALSO:A metal surface is cleaned by an aqueous alkaline solution containing alkali metal metasilicate, borax and a polyoxyethylene ethanol surface-active agent, and a phosphate coating then formed on the cleaned surface. The solution preferably contains 1-15 g/l alkali metal metasilicate, calculated as sodium metasilicate, borax in an amount equal to one-quarter to the whole of the weight of metasilicate, and 0.1-1 g/l. of surface-active agent chosen from octyl phenol/ethylene oxide condensates having 5-8 ethylene oxide groups in each molecule, C16-18 fatty alcohol/ethylene oxide condensates having 50-80 ethylene oxide groups in each molecule, m-methyl-p-octyl phenol/ethylene oxide condensates having 6/11 ethylene oxide groups in each molecule, and mixtures thereof. Phosphating is preferably effected with an aqueous acidic zinc dihydrogen phosphate type solution which is accelerated with e.g. nitrite, peroxide, bromate, sulphite, nitro-sulphonate, m-nitrobenezene sulphonate, picric acid or nitrate, optionally together with sodium ethylene diamine tetra-acetate. The cleaning and phosphating solutions are both preferably applied by spraying at a temperature below 120 DEG F. The phosphate coating may finally be rinsed in dilute chromic acid solution. Metals which may be treated are iron, steel, zinc, aluminium and copper. Specifications 865,497 and 871,606 are referred to.
