Abstract
1407269 Metal cleaning bath BASF WYANDOTTE CORP 10 Nov 1972 [11 Nov 1971] 51984/72 Heading C7E An aqueous bath for cleaning metals contains (a) FeSO 4 À7H 2 O (b) H 2 O 2 and/or HNO 3 (c) H 2 SO 4 and (d) a source of bi-fluoride ion; (d) is preferably K, Na, or NH 4 bi-fluoride, and preferred amounts in wt-per cent are (a) 1-60 (b) 5-25 (c) 5-60 (d) 0.2-5 and water, 10-60, in the concentrate, which may also contain up to 8 wt per cent NH 3 and up to 5% urea. The actual use solution contains 0-99% H 2 O and 100-1% of said concentrate. An accelerator for the above bath contains (1) water (2) NH 3 and (3) a source of NO 2 -, e.g. K, Na, or NH 4 nitrite, preferably in amounts (1) 65-75 wt per cent (2) 0-5% and (3) 25-35%. 1-4% of the accelerator is added to the concentrate. Cleaning is by immersion at 20-50C, for up to 25 minutes; typically Al is cleaned to remove etching smut, oxide films, conversion coatings or anodizing, but the bath may be used to clean Cu or brass.
