Abstract
934,160. Writing instruments. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. May 24, 1962 [June 6, 1961], No. 20363/61. Class 146 (3). Mechanism for retracting or projecting a writing instrument 4, such as a ball pen or a pencil, with respect to an outer casing 15, comprises a cylindrical writing-instrument carrier 2, a sleeve 7 slidably but non-rotatably mounted on the carrier and shorter than the carrier, and an operating member 11 rotatable but axially immovable with respect to the sleeve 7, the member 11 having a part 11a extending into a space between the sleeve 7 and corner 2 and formed with an operating cam 12 so that relative rotation between the parts 7, 11 causes projection of the instrument against the action of a retracting spring 13 situated between the inner end 3 of the carrier 2 and the member 11. The cam 12 acts on a pin 6 which is attached to the carrier 2 and engages a slot 8 in the sleeve 7 to prevent relative rotation between the parts 2, 7. Relative axial movement between the parts 7, 11 is prevented by crimping the sleeve 7 slightly into engagement with the member 11. The end 2b of the carrier 2 is hollow and split to receive the end 4 of the writing instrument 5. The outer casing 15 is attached to the mechanism by means of a threaded sleeve 14 on the casing and a threaded part 9 on the sleeve 7. An operating cap 16 can be pressed over a knurled part of the member 11. Specification 849,460 is referred to.
