In a retractable writing instrument, a ballpoint writing unit 16 (shown in broken lines) is constantly biased in a retracted position by a helical spring acting against the unit 16 and the barrel of the instrument, and a single actuating member 24 movable in a lateral opening in the barrel is provided for shifting the writing unit 16 to latching it in and releasing it from a projected position. The actuating member 24 is mounted only for radial depression. A longitudinally slidable thrust member 35 to which the writing unit 16 is attached, translates the inward depression of the actuating member 24 into shifting of the writing unit 16 to the projected position by means of cam surfaces 29 and 37. The thrust member 35 is then held in a latched position by latching surfaces 30 and 39, as in Fig. 3. On depressing further the upper part of the actuating member 24, the member pivots about a projection 42 integral with the thrust member 35 thereby releasing the latching surfaces 30 and 39. The thrust member 35 then rides back on the cam surfaces 29 and 37 to the retracted position. Attached to the actuating member 24 is a pocket clip 25 as shown.
