A fastening machine of the kind adapted automatically to attach an eyelet and a cooperating washer to sheet material comprises means for feeding eyelets to an attaching punch, means for feeding the washers in a strip, severing means for cutting a washer from the strip and conveying it to an assembly position and means co-operable with said punch to engage the eyelet and washer with the sheet material. The machine includes a base 10, motor 11, and a cam-shaft 15 driven through a clutch controlled by a pedal 16. The attaching punch comprises a sleeve 17 having a lower die face 18 adapted to co-operate with a curling tool 20. Through the sleeve 17 slides a piercing tool 21 which is reciprocated by rocking arm 31 actuated by a cam on the shaft 15. Further cams reciprocate the sleeve 17 through levers 25 and 26. There may be included means responsive to the movement of the punch for moving the curling tool 20, these may be one or more rocking arms 33, one end 34 of which is connected to the levers 25 or 26 by a rod 35, which has a slot 38 therein to provide a lost motion connection. Eyelet feeding means.-A supply of eyelets either loose, or fixed to a destructible belt, is accommodated in a hopper 39 and pass by means of a track 41, hinged at 42 to the path of the attaching punch 17. A freely rotatable roller 43 mounted on the punch engages a ramp 44 on the track and pushes the track clear to sever and isolate the leading eyelet 45 for engagement with a washer and the sheet material. The washers 46 are fed to the assembly position in a continuous chain or belt 47 through shoot 48. Operation.-The work is positioned under the piercing tool and the clutch operated. The piercing tool 21 cuts from the sheet material a wad which is smaller than the eyelet, the wad is pushed through the curling tool 20 and the punch then forces the eyelet through the sheet material and the washer on to the curling tool.
