Abstract
1,254,319. Making staples; bending; punching; shearing. M. PERLMAN. 19 Dec., 1968 [26 Dec., 1967], No. 60388/68. Headings B3A, B3E and B3W. [Also in Division E2] A machine for inserting staple type end stops in sliding clasp fasteners forms the end stops from a metal strip and inserts them in the sliding clasp fastener in a single operation. The metal strip 28 (Fig. 1) is fed intermittently by stationary grips 30 and moving grips 32 to a punch 78, 84. The moving grip 32 is operated by arm 36, and a wheel 40 which bears on cam surface 42 of ram 44. Ram 44 slides in channel 46. The ram is reciprocated by means of link 52 which is eccentrically pivoted on shaft 56 which in turn is driven by motor 64 via belt and pulley system 62, 58, 57. Drive plate 70 (Fig. 5) is connected pivotally to shaft 56 (Fig. 1) by link 50. The drive plate carries driver 74 (Fig. 5) and punch 78, the driver slides between blocks 80 on ram 44. As shaft 56 rotates anti-clockwise starting with pin 54 at 12 o'clock, the driver plate 70 is forced downward causing punch 78 and driver 74 to move downward. This causes the metal strip to have holes slotted in it, and the staple to be severed from the strip. Further downward movement causes the staple to be bent on slide 90 carrying a coil 94. When pin 54 reaches 9 o'clock the ram 44 moves downwards causing the slide 90 to be moved against the action of spring 116, from beneath the staple, and the staple to be forced down. The ram then forces the staple legs through the sliding clasp fastener stringer and against anvil 122 (Fig. 1) bending the legs over. The sliding clasp fastener chain moves past the ram head intermittently. Its motion is controlled by a blade 132 (Fig. 11, not shown), connected to spring-loaded arm 134 (Fig. 1), which operates a solenoid 138 controlling the sliding clasp fastener chain drive means. Blade 132 acts as a locating stop for the sliding clasp fastener chain and is disengaged by the downward movement of ram 44. Two types of end stop may be used, both are characterized in that they do not produce a continuous cut through the stringer top along their entire lengths (Figs. 9 and 13, not shown). Specification 3,445,912 is referred to.
