Abstract

1369110 Attaching pronged fasteners TEXTRON Inc 20 Nov 1972 [7 Dec 1971] 53532/72 Heading B4C [Also in Divisions A3 and B8] In an machine for attaching pronged fasteners to material at a setting station 14 two separate feed assemblies 10, 12 are provided, one for pronged head elements 90 and the other for backing elements 96; each feed assembly comprises a hopper 20, 74, a guide channel 28, 78 one end of which opens at the setting station, a shoot 26, 76 connected to the respective hopper and the other end of the guide channel, and a pusher arm for driving the respective element through the guide channel to the setting station, the guide channel for the pronged head elements being shaped to align the prongs as they pass through the channel. Initially the pronged head elements and the backing elements are charged into the respective shoots from the hoppers. Shoot 26 for the pronged head elements 90 is detachably secured to the guide channel 28 by a thumb screw 30 and delivers the lowermost element at 45 degrees on to a bevelled area 56 with the head portion resting against a retainer pin 58 on a pivoted arm 60. Shoot 76 for the backing elements 96 delivers an element into the guide channel 78 at the same time. The machine is now ready for operation by a foot operated switch to cause the pusher arms to feed the respective elements along the guide channels to the setting station. When the pusher arm 68 moves forward it causes the arm 60 to rotate against the action of a spring 66 to clear the pin 58 from the path of the element. The pronged head element is pushed along a cam surface 54 so that the prongs project upwardly ready for engagement with a labyrinth passage formed by a fixed wall 39 and a wall 41 resiliently supported on springs. As the element advances it oscillates until the prongs are aligned. After the element 90 together with the backing element 96 from the other guide channel have reached the setting station 14, the pusher arms withdraw and levers 16 cause upward drive of an anvil 80 and downward drive of a ram 82 to clench the fastener on to material 98. Further feed assemblies and setting stations may be provided as shown by the chain-dotted lines in Fig. 1 for attaching several fasteners in a single operation. The machine may be operated electrically, hydraulically or pneumatically.
