Abstract

912,434. Making sparking plug and gasket assemblies; jointing. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Sept. 26, 1961 [Oct. 7, 1960], No. 34458/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVI] A method of making a sparking-plug and gasket assembly comprises placing on the threaded end of a plug an annular gasket having a number of inwardly extending nibs and reducing the gasket while on the plug so that the nibs engage in the thread. A circular gasket 1 of a " C " cross-section and having equispaced inwardly-projecting nibs formed on its inner periphery such that they clear the threaded portion of the plug is supported in a recess 5 of a split collet 6 by a guide sleeve 12. The screwed end of a spark plug is inserted through and rests on the gasket and a ram 14 is operated to pull the split collet 6 downwards relative to a fixed holder 11. The collet, due to the wedging action between its external tapered face and the internal tape of the holder 11 compresses the gasket radially inwards to reduce its diameter and cause the nibs 2 to engage in the thread. The gasket is preferably made from copperplated steel.
