Abstract

1,001,760. Mechanical seals. FORSHEDA GUMMIFABRIK A.B. Nov. 22, 1962 [Nov. 23, 1961; May 16, 1962], No. 44271/62. Heading F2B. A rubber &c. sealing ring 1 for a rotary shaft 7 where it extends through a wall 9 comprises a ring portion 6 and an integral sealing lip 8 that extends from the inner part of the portion 6 and terminates in a sealing edge engaging the wall and defined by an inner surface of revolution 5 and an outer conical surface 11. The surface 5 may be curved, for example generated by an arc of a circle. The bore of the portion 6, in its free state, is less than the diameter of the shaft so that the ring tightly grips and rotates with the shaft. Rings may be made by rotating a rubber tube 12, Fig. 2, on a mandrel 13, the tube having grooves 10 formed therein either before or after mounting the tube on the mandrel, and cutting slits in the tube to form the surfaces 5 and 11 by means of two sets of tools 14 and 15 respectively, the tube being held axially by a guide 18 engaging one of the grooves 10. The slits made by the tools 14 terminate a small distance from the bore of the tube so that when required a sealing ring can be separated from the tube manually.
