Abstract

Unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes and ketones are obtained by reacting an olefine with an aqueous solution or suspension of a mercurous salt in the presence of a strong acid and at elevated temperature. In examples, propylene gives acrolein, and butene-1 gives methyl vinyl ketone. Olefines having up to six carbon atoms can be reacted. Specified acids are perchloric, sulphuric, methane sulphonic and p-toluene sulphonic. The acid can be generated during the reaction by using the corresponding mercurous salt.
