Abstract
Detergent compositions which are especially suitable for washing textiles of cellulosic substances or of synthetic linear polyamides are obtained by mixing an alcoholic, aqueous, or aqueous-alcoholic solution of a quaternary ammonium, pyridinium, morpholinium, or phosphonium cationic surface active salt with at least twice the weight of an alkaline or neutral inorganic alkali metal salt, e.g. sodium carbonate, bicarbonate, borate, perborate, sulphate, phosphate, monohydrogen phosphate, metaphosphate, pyrophosphate or tripolyphosphate, drying the mixture, if necessary, to remove any visible liquid and then intimately mixing with an anionic surface active agent, e.g. sodium alkyl sulphate, sodium or triethanolammonium pdodecylbenzene sulphonate, sodium isopropyl napththalene sulphonate, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, N-oleoyl-N-methyl taurine or sodium soap, there being added at any stage in the process an optical whitener consisting of a :b -di(benzoxazolyl-(2))-ethylene or a :b -di(benziminazyl-(2))-ethylene or derivatives thereof having as nuclear substituents one or more alkyl, alkoxy, arylalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, nitro or halogen groups or atoms, the amount of cationic surface active agent and optical whitener being respectively 0,1-50%, preferably 0,5-20%, and 0,005-2,5% by weight of the anionic surface active agent. The preferred anionic surface active agent is sodium p-dodecylbenzene sulphonate and the preferred optical whitener is a :b -di(5-methylbenzoxazolyl-(2))-ethylene. The compositions may also include sodium and magnesium silicates, and china clay.
