Abstract

902,971. Automatic couplings with transition gear. USINES EMILE HENRICOT S.A. July 30, 1959 [Aug. 14, 1958], No. 26206/58. Class 103(5). An automatic coupling having a knuckle pivoted at 7 and provided with known ledges such as 16 and 17 which co-operate with lugs on the wings 9, 10 so as to relieve the pin of buffing and draw loads, has arcuate lugs 22, 23 on top and bottom portions of the knuckle tail which co-operate with ledges 24, 26, and surfaces 25, 27 in the head casting. Tolerances are arranged so that corresponding lugs and ledges make contact successively when proceeding from the tail of the knuckle to the pivot. By arranging the lugs and ledges 22-27 as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5, the line of action of the draft force may be directed along a line 37 through the centre of ledge 26 to the root of the. draw bar 3 and not through the pin 7 in a direction parallel to the draw bar, thus reducing stress in the knuckle. Conversely, however, as the angle α increases, the lock and the wings of the coupler will be more heavily loaded. The knuckle .5 may also be provided with a tail end 28 adapted to catch behind a further lug on the head casting, and the knuckle may be shaped to engage a ledge on the lock 11, Fig. 6 (not shown). The lock 11, Fig. 7, has a ledge 42 which engages in the locking position beneath a ridge 43 on the head casting to prevent unintentional unlocking, and the lock lifter 41 is also provided with a head 44 adapted to engage a ledge 45 if the lifter should jump upwardly in operation. A transition gear, Figs. 9, 10 and 11 (not shown), is also provided, and employs an internally and externally oppositely screw threaded tube containing a screwed rod. The tube at one end screws into a nut pivoted to a shackle, and the other or remote end of the screwed rod is pivoted to a casting journalled in a pocket below the knuckle. A handle is provided for rotating the tube and varying the length of the gear, which gear in operation extends through a cut in the buffing face 4 of the head.
