Abstract
987,087. Centralizing combined buffer and draw gear. NATIONAL CASTINGS CO. March 13, 1962 [March 30, 1961], No. 9678/62. Heading B7T. An automatic coupling head 2 ball and socket jointed to a draw bar 4, is arranged for transitional coupling and provided with a downwardly extending shank pin 8 which engages within the eye 30 of a tail bolt 22 held in a central longitudinal position by a spring 24 and a sleeve 26. The pin 8 extends through a housing 12 beneath the coupler shank, and has mounted thereon a semi-circular centring cam 14 which may either pivot freely within the housing, or be non- rotatably locked thereto by a pivoted latch 38 on the housing adapted to pass into a recess 42 in the cam. In operation the spring 24, sleeve 26 and tail bolt 22 centralize the head in a vertical plane, and if the cam 14 is locked to the housing 12, then the cam may abut by its corners 60 against a surface 36 of the sleeve 26 to centralize the head in a horizontal plane. The head may be moved out of position by manual force after operating the latch 38 to free the cam 14.
