Abstract
In the separation of acyclic conjugated diolefins from hydrocarbon mixtures by reaction with sulphur dioxide to form a sulphone, the unreacted hydrocarbon is separated as a liquid from the sulphone which latter is decomposed to recover the diolefin. The reaction with sulphur dioxide is effected in the liquid phase at 60-80 DEG C. and up to 1,000 p.s.i.g. with a molar ratio of sulphur dioxide to diolefin between 1 : 1 and 8 : 1. The dimerisation of cyclic dienes is preferably effected simultaneously. The process may be continuous, the reactants being continuously introduced into a reactor from which hydrocarbons are recovered at the top and sulphones at the bottom. A polymerization inhibitor, e.g. an alkyl phenol may be present. The sulphone is decomposed by distillation at atmospheric pressure and dissolving the sulphur dioxide in an aqueous liquid.
