Abstract
Aliphatic, including cycloaliphatic, mercaptans are prepared by reacting olefines with hydrogen sulphide in the presence as catalyst of a boron trifluoride/diethyl ether complex, preferably BF3.(C2H5)2O. Preferably 1-30% b weight of the olefine of catalyst is used with reaction temperatures of 0-5 DEG C. Anhydrous conditions are preferred. Elevated pressure may be used. The mercaptan layer may be separated mechanically from the catalyst layer which may be recycled. Alternatively, the catalyst may be decomposed with water and the mercaptan separated from the aqueous phase. Specification 602,238 is referred to.
