Abstract
2-Methyl-1-butene is produced by a process involving (1) reacting propene with triethyl aluminium to give mixtures of hydrocarbons including 2-methyl-1-butene which is recovered and mixtures of aluminium trialkyls, and (2) reacting the aluminium trialkyls in the presence of a nickel hydrogenation catalyst to produce aluminium triethyl which is recycled to the first step and a hydrocarbon mixture including 2-methyl-1-butene which is recovered. Propene and ethylene also recovered from the hydrocarbon mixtures are recycled to the first and second steps respectively. The first step is operated with excess propene, e.g. 3-6 mols. per mol. of aluminium triethyl at 100-250 DEG C. and 110-500 atmospheres. The second step may be effected using excess ethylene at 50-150 DEG C. and 20-150 atmospheres; suitable catalysts are finely divided nickel or Raney nickel or other metal or metal salt which adsorbs ethylene; the presence of this catalyst does not affect the first stage and the catalyst may therefore be present in both stages.
