Abstract

Phosphate coatings are produced upon iron, steel and/or zinc surfaces by contacting the surfaces with a solution containing one or more alkali metal (including ammonium) phosphates in a concentration of at least 4 g/l. of phosphate (expressed as PO4), and one or more bromates in a concentration of at least 0.1 g/l. (expressed as BrO3), at a temperature not above 130 DEG F. The solution may also contain a trace of ferric ion and one or more accelerators (nitrate, chlorate, nitrite) in addition to bromate. The coated surfaces may be rinsed in dilute chromic and/or phosphoric acid.
