Abstract

899,835. Photo-electric tracking apparatus. GENERAL MILLS Inc. Jan. 12, 1960 [Jan. 13, 1959], No. 1146/60. Class 40(7). [Also in Group XXXVI] In a target tracking system a light spot from the target is imaged at 32 on to a photo-cell 10 capable of providing two outputs representing the displacement of the light spot in two co-ordinate directions. The photo-cell is of N-type germanium having a central grain boundary 12 and ohmic contacts 14, 16 on its ends. At each end of the grain boundary is a rectifying indium contact 18, 20. The output between contacts 14, 16 is shown in Fig. 2 changing sign abruptly at the grain boundary; that between contacts 18, 20 is shown in Fig. 3 is zero at the horizontal axis of symmetry of the crystal. The outputs are applied respectively to amplifiers 44, 46 to control servomotors 40, 42 which rotate a mirror 30 about vertical and horizontal axes to maintain the light spot on the grain boundary and on the horizontal axis of symmetry of the crystal. The servo mechanism may be replaced by voltmeters or cathode ray tubes providing a two dimensional display of spot position.
