Abstract
899,338. Automatic couplings for railway vehicles. AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES. March 16. 1959 [May 7, 1958], No. 9022/59. Class 103(5). A rotary lock lift mechanism in an automatic coupling comprises a hook 2, Fig. 1, which may be pivoted at 3 to the coupler head, a lever connector 9 pivoted at 10 to the hook and having an eye 13 for reception of an operating rod hook (not shown), a bridge 14 across lugs 6, 8, a hook engaging rib 12, and a jaw 16 provided with an anticreep lug 17. In the Fig. 1 position the tail 18 of the hook engages the bridge 14 and the hook engages the rib 12 so that the hook and lever may move together during unlocking operation. In prior art arrangements the tail 18 had excessive width and was apt to bind at y. Fig. 3, as the hook hinged relative to the lever. Such mal-functioning is prevented in the present invention by beveling the tail 18 to an angle of approximately 13 degrees and extending such beveling upwardly to a point 20, Fig. 4, on the hub 4 so that the widths 4a. 4b of the bearing surfaces are equal.
