Abstract

895,996. Road vehicle spring suspensions; pneumatic springs. GOUIRAND, R. Feb. 9, 1959, No. 4406/59. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). A pneumatic spring acting between a road vehicle axle 3 and the chassis frame comprises a primary pneumatic chamber A and a surge chamber B. The chambers A and B are separated by a flexible diaphragm 19 and the chamber A is also closed from the atmosphere by a flexible diaphragm 20 the stiffness of which is greater than that of the diaphragm 19. The rigid part of the housing of the chamber B is connected rigidly with the axle 10 by arms 9 (see exploded view in Fig. 5, and is connected with the frame by a resilient joint 13 to a transverse rigid member 16. Rubber buffers 12 on the arms 9 serve to take the vehicle weight in the case of failure of the spring add limit excessive travel of the spring. As shown, the invention is applied to tandem axles and the respective primary chambers A, A are connected by a passage 26, flow in either direction through which may be regulated by the action of a manually operated pair of valves 27, 27. The surge chamber B in each case may be completely sealed from atmosphere, or as shown it may have an outlet port 24 which is adapted to be closed by a pad 25 on the diaphragm 19 when pressure in the chamber A exceeds a predetermined amount. A snubber cable 30 is secured at its ends to respective side frame members 1 and has members 32 (Fig. 6) which bear on the axles 3, 4. The tension of the cable may be adjusted by means of a handle 36. Between the cable 30 and each axle end is disposed a pneumatic spring chamber 11 which is connected in each case by a conduit 38 with the respective primary chamber A. The pressure in the primary chambers A may be augmented from a pressure source. In a modification (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), each axle 3, 4 is carried on an extension arm rigid with the associated housing 7. Also the upper surface of each primary chamber A is flexible instead of being rigid.
