Filled open-mouthed bags are evacuated, or evacuated and filled with gas, and then heat sealed in a plurality of chambers 2, Fig. 1, mounted on a continuously rotating rotor 3, each chamber 2 comprising a head piece 4 fast with the rotor 3, a pair of pivotable heat sealing jaws 6 in the head piece, a package or bag carrier 7 suspended beneath the jaws 6, and a co-operating bell 5 that can rise and seal against the head 4 to enclose the bag package. In operation, the bags are received from a wheel 1, Fig. 2, and moved by endless conveyers 26, 27, 28 on to an arm 8 where, a slider 10 pushes the package P into the carrier 7 of a chamber 2. The arm 8 moves with the chamber 2 whilst the package P is being inserted. A lower control head 35 then permits the associated bell 5 to be raised by a pneumatically-operated cylinder unit 33 to force the bell 5 against the head piece 4. An upper control head 50 permits the enclosed chamber 2 to be evacuated and filled with gas, or only evacuated, one or more times in succession. The sept sealing jaws 6, extending radially of the rotor, then close temporarily on the mouth of the bag to heat seal it. Air then enters the chamber 2, the bell 5 is lowered, and a slider 11 on an arm 9 rigid with the arm 8, pushes the sealed bag P on to a continuously rotating disc 30 which turns the package through 90 degrees and transfers it to a further slider 31 that reinserts the bag or package into the wheel 1.
