In a method for packing materials in flexible impermeable bags under special atmospheric conditions, the filled bags are arranged in rows in channel members to avoid the necessity of individual handling, their mouths are partly closed, they are introduced into a vacuum chamber, and when treated to produce the desired atmosphere, are removed and finally sealed still held in the channel members. In one embodiment bags 10 in open channels 13 are sealed at 11 and perforated below the seal at 12. The channels 13 are arranged in a crate 14 and the whole is passed into a vacuum chamber 15 where, after removal of air, a neutral gas may be introduced. The crate is passed out of the chamber and the channels extracted for passage through means sealing the bags below the perforations 12 and, optionally, cutting off the closure parts protruding above this lower seal. In another embodiment the initial seal and perforations are dispensed with and the bag mouths are held partially closed by overlapping portions 34 on the channels. One side 39 of the channels may be hinged to permit removal of the bags. In a further embodiment for packing under vacuum, sealed and perforated bags as in Fig. 7. have valve flaps (not shown) which fold over and close the perforations when air has been extracted.
