Abstract

A hydraulic brake fluid comprises (a) a volatile fraction which consists of a monodi-, tri-, or tetra-alkylene glycol, an alkyl ether thereof, a primary or a secondary monohydric alcohol, or mixtures of such substances, and (b) a non-volatile fraction consisting of the reaction product of 15-30, more preferably 17-25, molar proportions of a lower alkylene oxide containing 1-5 carbon atoms such as ethylene, propylene, or butylene oxide, with one molar proportion of a glyceride of a hydroxy substituted fatty acid. (a) suitably comprises not more than 80% of the fluid by weight and preferably consists of one or more of the following:-2-methyl-2:4-pentanediol, di-and tri-ethylene glycol monoethyl ethers, ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, and diacetone alcohol. If the fraction (b) consists of the reaction product of the glyceride with ethylene oxide and one or more other oxides, the ethylene oxide is usually reacted with the glyceride first and the product then reacted with the other oxides. The alkylene oxide groups in the product may however be arranged randomly or in blocks of the same type of alkylene oxide groups as desired. The preferred product is obtained by reacting 1 molar proportion of castor oil with 19 molar proportions of ethylene oxide.
