Abstract
868,434. Milling-cutters. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION Ltd. March 10, 1960 [May 21, 1959], No. 17260/59. Class 83 (3). A face milling-cutter comprises a frustoconical body 10, Figs. 2-4, secured to a spindle 11 and driven by keys 14, the body having peripheral rectangular slots 17 into each of which is secured a rectangular cutter-blade 18. The slots are cut at an angle to the body to form a negative-rake, and open into the operative face 16 of the cutter. Each blade is secured to the bottom and side of its slot by an L-shaped clamp 19, and a spring-urged wedge 21, located in a notch 20 in the side of the slot. A spring 31, Fig. 4, urges the blade out of the slot when the wedge is released. Each blade is supported by the body at 24, 25 and by the outer end 19A of the clamp 19. In a modification for heavy-duty milling, the blades have a positive rake, and the body 40, Fig. 9, has an enlarged portion 55 to support the tipped blades, and has a groove 56 in advance of each blade to provide clearance, and to support the blade.
