Abstract
852,009. Making cuts in the tops of loaves &c. FRYKLING, G. E. May 15, 1959, No. 16788/59. Class 87(2). A loaf 10, in the top of which a series of cuts or nicks are to be made, is conveyed by a belt 3, with raised edges, beneath a shearing device 2 which is power-operated to cause cooperating shearing edges 28<SP>1</SP>, 31<SP>1</SP> to ship transversely through the top portion only of the loaf, the relative movement between the loaf and the device resulting in a series of transverse cuts. The edges 28<SP>1</SP>, 31<SP>1</SP> are on tooth-like projections 28, 31 from the peripheries of discs 27, 30, one of which is secured to a flange 26 on a sleeve 25 freely rotatable on a shaft 22 and the other to a flange 29 secured to the shaft, the faces of the two discs being in sliding contact. The discs are rotated in opposite directions from a shaft 18, driven by a motor 16. The drive comprises a gear-wheel 19 driving a gear-wheel 21 on the shaft 22 and a sprocket wheel 20 driving a sprocket wheel 24, on the sleeve 25, through a chain 23. The shearing device 2 is pivotally suspended at 11 and a screw threaded rod 12 and wing nut 14 enable its inclination to be adjusted. A cavity 32 between the flanges 26, 29 is filled with grease to lubricate the opposing faces of the discs. There may be two, three or more projections from each disc, the speed of the motor and the gear ratio of the drive being suitably co-ordinated.
