Abstract
1,180,410. Melting and extracting iron. A. CARLI. Oct.19, 1967 [Oct. 20, 1966], No.47615/67. Heading C7D. [Also in Division F4] A shaft furnace for the reduction of iron oxides, comprises a lower hearth portion 9, and an upper shaft portion Sh. The charge which consists solely of iron ore and scrap, is fed down the shaft into the melting and reduction zone formed just above a well in the hearth where it is smelted with powdered coal introduced through a ring of nozzles (not shown) and/or hollow electrodes 4, which electrodes 4 and/or fluid fuel burners B, provide the heat needed by the process. The liquid pig iron and slag so produced, are discharged through tap holes Fe, Sg respectively. Carbon monoxide evolved from the bath, passes up from the smelting zone to be completely combusted with oxygen and/or air, introduced through tuyere ON, and further nozzles (not shown) fed by branch pipes NO, the heat produced being used to pre-heat the descending charge. The charge contains from 10 to 50% by weight of its iron content in the form of scrap.
