Abstract
In the operation of a blast furnace for the extraction of iron there is injected into the furnace at a point contiguous to the entry of the blast gas a slurry consisting of pulverized carbonaceous matter in a liquid carrier which may be a hydrocarbon, water or a mixture thereof. The slurry may also contain iron ore fines, and powdered flux materials, and the blast may be enriched with oxygen. The amount of slurry which may be added is related to the temperature and to the oxygen content of the blast. The latter is preheated to 1000-2315 DEG F.
