Yarn winding apparatus comprises means for mounting and rotating a tube, a yarn traversing element mounted to reciprocate lengthwise of the tube, a pivoted double-ended lever having one end connected to said traversing element and its other end associated with cam means which operate the lever to rock on its pivot, the lever pivot being carried by a movable guide having operating means adapted to give it a linear movement at a given ratio to the rotary speed of the cam for automatically changing the position of the pivot and thus the arcuate stroke of the lever adjacent the traversing element to gradually shorten the traverse of the element equally on each side of a centre line. In the embodiment shown cam 4 is rotated by shaft 1 and engages a roller 16 mounted in slot 14 of lever 13 and thus pivots the lever 13 about its pivot 12. The other end of lever 13 engages traversing element 20 which carries a traversing yarn guide. The pivot 12 is mounted on sliding block 6 operated by a screwed spindle 7 rotated through a worm and worm wheel by shaft 10 driven through pulley 11 from cam shaft 1. The arrangement is such that as the package being wound grows the pivot 12 rises and thus shortens the traverse of member 20 to produce conical ends on the package. Means may be provided for manually or automatically rotating the spindle 7 in a reverse direction to reset the pivot 12. A knockoff lever 30 is actuated by a peg 31 on the block 6 to stop the winding. The package 34 being wound is mounted in front of the element 20. and located in recessed collars 26, 27 (Fig. 3) and driven by shaft 28.
