Abstract

Polymers containing nitrile groups, e.g. homopolymers, copolymers and graft polymers of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and vinylidene cyanide and cyanoethylated cellulose, are reacted with hydroxlylamine until at least a part of the nitrile groups has reacted, and the polymeric reaction product is treated with ammonia, hydrazine or an organic base, e.g. ethylene diamine, diethylamine, triethylamine or piperidine. The reaction with hydroxylamine is preferably applied to fibres, films or fabrics of the polymeric material and may be carried out to convert the nitrile groups of not more than 20% of the total polymeric material reckoning from the surfaces of the articles inwards. If the polymers are yellowed by the application of the process treatment with an acid removes the coloration. The products of the process show increased affinity for dyestuffs, particularly acid dyestuffs.
