Abstract
A polymer containing nitrile groups is treated with hydroxylamine until at least a part of the nitrile groups has reacted and the resulting product is then further treated successively with an acid and a base. Polymers containing nitrile groups specified are those of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and vinylidene cyanide and copolymers thereof with vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylic or methacrylic esters and vinyl pyridine, cyanoethylated polyvinyl alcohol and cyanoethylated cellulose. Acids specified are sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, formic, acetic and oxalic acids. Bases specified are sodium and potassium hydroxides, hydrazine, di- and tri-ethylamine, diamino-1,2-ethane, diethyl-N1-N1-amino)-1-diamino-1,2-ethane and brucine. The polymers may be treated whilst in solution or in powder, film or fibre form. The resulting products show good dyability. Specification 833,204 also is referred to.
