Abstract
832,167. Reciprocating pumps. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Oct. 22, 1958 [Oct. 25, 1957], No. 33700/58. Class 102(1). The plunger of a reciprocating pump for pumping liquefied gases is recessed at 28a so that at the end of the pumping stroke the inlet valve which projects into the cylinder is enclosed by the plunger which substantially fills the clearance space about the valve. In the embodiment shown the inlet valve comprises a multiplicity of balls 18 which may be solid or hollow. In a second embodiment a single ball valve is used. The plunger 28 is slidable in a sleeve 29 made of lubricant containing metal and a low thermal conductivity plastic spacer 30 is positioned in the sleeve. A passage 31 permits the return of leakage along the plunger to the container in which the pump is immersed. A stuffing box 33, is provided at the outer end of the plunger. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the pump body is surrounded by an insulated stuffing box arrangement where it passes through the insulated container, the pump being almost horizontally supported by the container or by a framework supporting the container.
