Abstract

839,333. Making heat exchangers; stamping; punching. KRITZER, R. W. July 29, 1957, No. 23941/57 Classes 83(2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XIII] In a method of making heat transfer units; e.g. airconditionershaving tubing, e.g. of copper and fins, e.g. of aluminium, a continuous web of fin-stock 20, Fig. 1, is formed with openings 21 surrounded by flanges 23 and the stock bent transversely to align the openings and flanges in longitudinal zones to form fins serially connected at alternately opposite ends the longitudinal zones being severed from the stock and constituting strips into which tubing is inserted. Gangs of tools mounted on a head b and a bed a, Figs. 9, 10, operate on longitudinal zones of aluminium fin-stock 20 which is supplied from a reel. The gangs act simultaneously one to each longitudinal zone or strip and the stock is advanced step-by-step so that tools 42, 44 act together to reverse and perforate the bulges 37; 40, Fig. -12, previously formed by the tools 35, 38, after which the punches 49; 51 simultaneously act to form flanges 23a prior to the final formations of flanges 23 by the tools 56, 57. Perforations 25 are formed by the punches 62 acting simultaneously with tools 42, 44. Dies 70, 74 and knives 90, Fig. 14 (not shown) act simultaneously with tools 56, 57 to form, respectively, turbulence ribs 24 and slits 26 between the longitudinal zones, which remain connected by tabs 26a. The stock is stripped from the lower press tools after each step by spring-loaded plungers 68. The strips are finally bent trans- .versely to form an interconnected fin system, Fig. 17, the slits 26 extending substantially through the fins, adjacent zones or strips being attached only by the tabs 26a which are severed as required to separate a single strip or a group of strips from the bent stock. By inserting and expanding tubes in the aligned openings 21 heat transfer units of various tube arrangements are formed, the number of strips severed from the stock and the position of the transverse bends in the stock being varied to suit the particular unit required.
