Abstract

837,443. Rotary selector valves. PLESSEY CO. Ltd., and UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 30, 1957 [Oct. 3, 1956], No. 30133/56. Class 135. A rotary selector valve for gas sampling purposes comprises a cylindrical body 10 formed with two rows of staggered ports 14 and a rotary connector arm 15 carried by a vertical drive shaft 16 and provided with a pair of axially spaced ports 19 which communicate alternately with the ports 14 as the arm 15 is intermittently rotated, thus putting a port 14 in connection with an outlet 26 though passages 15a, 15b. One of the body ports 14e is arranged to provide a connection 14d between one of the ports 19 and the interior of the valve body 10, all the other body ports being in communication with gas inlet pipes. The ports 19 are formed by carbon rings pressed into sealing contact with the interior surface of the valve body 10 by springs 24 encircling bellows 21. The lower end of drive shaft 16 is sealed by a carbon bush 28 and integral rings 31, and the upper end by gland rings 35, 39 and integral rings 34, the space between rings 34, 39 being fed with gas at a pressure of about 5 lb/sq. inch from an inlet 40 to reduce leakage from the valve body. Arm 15, shaft 16 and their associated driving mechanism may be removed with a cover 11 to allow inspection and maintenance without breaking any of the pipe connections to the body 10. The drive mechanism for the intermittent rotation of arm 15 comprises an electric motor 53, Fig. 2, driving worm gearing 44, 56 on shaft 70 through chain and sprocket gearing 57, 58, 59, the latter sprocket being of the one-way driving type, and the end of shaft 70 carrying a two-lobed cam-like member 64, Fig. 3, subjected to opposed centring rollers and springs 63, 65. Rotation of arm 15 is effected by motor 53 until shaft 70 carries the crests of lobes 64 just beyond rollers 63, when springs 65 rapidly flick shaft 70 forwardly, disconnecting motor 53 through a microswitch 61, and centring member 64 so that arm 15 is correctly registered with the next wall port 14.
