Abstract
A blood glue consists of an aqueous dispersion of dried soluble blood, a lignocellulosic filler, a gum such as kataya, locus bean, or guar gum, and lime or formaldehyde. According to an example (example IX), 100 parts of a dry mix containing 50% dried blood powder, 40% filler obtained from the processing of corn cobs to make furfural, 0,5% karaya gum, 2% lime and small proportions of surface-tension reducing agents, pine oil and stearic acid were mixed with 104 parts of water at 15 DEG C. and 3 parts pine oil, 151 parts of water at 100 DEG C. were then added, followed by 115 parts of water 15 DEG C. whereby the temperature of the dispersion obtained was within the range 20 to 75 DEG C., e.g. 40 DEG C. There were then mixed into the dispersion in stages or further 5 parts of lime in 9 parts of water, 15 parts of 50% sodium hydroxide solution in 75 parts of water at 15 DEG C., 3 parts of lime in 6 parts of water and 39 parts of water-glass with 27 parts of phenolic resin solution. The glue-mix obtained had a granular texture and a short flow, and was spreadable over at least a period of six hours. In the procedure of another example (example XI), the dry mix contained no lime, both formaldehyde and lime being used in the treatment of the dispersion of the dry mix in water.
