Abstract
828,889. Electric glass furnaces. LIBBEY-OWENS-FORD GLASS CO. May 28, 1956, No. 16386/56. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XII] In a glass melting furnace of the tank type having a submerged bridge between the melting and refining zones, the furnace is heated by burners in ports 20, 21 and by electrodes 26-38 disposed in the rear wall of the bridge 22. The electrodes may be connected alternately to the leads A, B and C of a three-phase A.C. supply as shown in Fig. 2. Convection currents are induced up over the electrodes, part of the molten glass passing over the bridge, and the rest passing back towards the feeding end along the upper surfaces of the bath to assist in melting the charge material which travels along the bottom of the bath towards the bridge. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), additional electrodes are also disposed in the front wall of the bridge. Specifications 447,228 and 828,890 are referred to.
