Abstract
822,818. Glass melting electrode furnaces. LIBBEY-OWENS-FORD,GLASS CO. May 14, 1956, No. 14866/56. Class 39(3) [Also in Groups XII and XXIII] In a glass melting furnace of the tank type heated by burners in side ports 17, 18, a row of electrodes 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 32 and 33 extends through the hearth 14 across the tank in the region where an upwardly rising current of molten glass is induced by firing some burners, preferably the middle ones, at a higher rate. The electrodes may be coupled in turn as shown to the leads A, B and C of a threephase supply 25 and nozzles 34 supplying air or other gas are disposed between each electrode. The electrodes may be constructed of a variety of materials e.g. carbon, graphite, chromium-iron alloy platinum or rare metal alloys, wrought iron or steel, copper, nickel, molybdenum or zinc. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), each electrode is surrounded by a ring of nozzles supplying the air &c. A further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), has hollow electrodes through which the air &c. is supplied. The invention may be applied to a conventional regeneratively-heated tank furnace. Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), in which six electrodes are disposed vertically across the hearth in the region of the middle one of five burner ports. Specification 616,451 is referred to.
