Abstract

Mixed aromatic coal acid compounds, i.e. coal acids, their water-soluble salts, particularly the alkali metal and ammonium salts, and mixtures thereof, are produced by the oxidation of an aqueous alkaline slurry of finely divided coal or of coke that has been obtained by the carbonization of coal at temperatures below 700 DEG C. Oxidation may be effected with gaseous oxygen at a temperature between 200 DEG and 300 DEG C. and under a pressure of from 500 to 1200 pounds per square inch. The free coal acids may then be isolated by acidifying the solution with sulphuric acid and, after filtration, recovering the water-soluble free acids by extraction with a water-immiscible solvent, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone. The coal acid compounds may also be obtained by the nitric acid oxidation of suitable carbonaceous materials. Suitable coals are anthracite, bituminous coal and lignite. The coal acids are polycarboxylic and have an average molecular weight of 250 and an average equivalent weight of about 80, the aromatic nuclei of the acids being preponderantly methylnaphthalene, benzene, biphenyl, naphthalene, phenanthrene, alkyl benzene, benzophenone and toluene nuclei.ALSO:Nylon yarn or like filamentary material is finished to facilitate its construction into fabric by the deposition thereon of a plastified film of mixed coal acid compounds, i.e. mixed aromatic acid compounds obtained by the oxidation of coal (see Group IV (b)), comprising free coal acids, water-soluble salts of free coal acids or mixtures thereof. The film of coal acid compounds may be plastified by a solvent for the compounds, e.g. water, glycerine, a glycol or a polyglycol, and the finish may be applied in solution in such a solvent by immersing the yarn in the solution or by roller or wick applicators or liquid jet or spray devices. The film finish may be dried in air, preferably at an elevated temperature, e.g. with heated ovens or heat lamps. The finish may subsequently be removed by scouring with water or "Triton X-100" (Registered Trade Mark), an alkyl-aryl polyether alcohol type of detergent. The coal acid compounds may be applied in combination with other finishes or sizes for nylon, e.g. polyacrylic acid.
