818,947. Variable-speed gearing; stopping and starting machinery. MYFORD ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 26, 1957 [Jan. 30, 1956], No. 2857/56. Class 80 (2). A belt-driven change-speed gear, particularly for a lathe, comprises a plurality of pulleys 3, 4, 5 on the driving-shaft 1 connected by belts 9, 10, 11 with pulleys 6, 7, 8 on the driven shaft 2 to give different speed ratios. The belts are supported clear of their co-operating pulleys in an untensioned state by semi-circular guides 12, 12. Jockey pulleys 14, 15, 16 are adapted to be moved into engagement to tension a selected one of the belts to effect a drive thereby. The pulleys 14, 15, 16 are supported respectively on arms 17, 18, 19 adapted to be moved by the tail ends 25, 26, 27 of control levers 21, 22, 23. Trip levers 31, 32, 33 are associated with the control levers to prevent more than one of the arms 17, 18, 19 being moved into drive-engaging position at the same time.
