Class 20(2) A mine arch or prop comprises overlapping flanged channel members clamped one inside the other and adapted to yield relatively under mine roof pressure which on first being clamped engage one another by means of their flanges 3 or bases 2 only and on increase of clamping pressure the gap between the webs 1 is closed. The inner girder is deformed to close this gap by inclined surfaces on projections 8 of one clamping part 4 or wedges 7 in the other clamping part 5 engage the flanges of the outer girder and may be driven by hammer blows or by the movement of the outer girder under mine roof pressure. The inner surface of the webs adjacent the flanges may be curved.
