817,854. Fluid pressure brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Aug. 19, 1957 [Nov. 19, 1956], No. 26071/57. Class 103 (1). Apparatus for modulating the pressure applied to aircraft brakes comprises a source of pressure fluid, a pilot-controlled valve for applying the fluid to the brakes and a pressure regulating valve adjusted by means controlled by the aircraft speed relative to air for modulating the pressure applied by the pilotcontrolled valve. Pressure fluid is supplied from tank 9 via pump 10, pipe 11, and pressure regulator valve 12 to the pilot's control valve 13 operated by a pedal 20 to connect either the supply pipe 16 or exhaust pipe 18 to a pipe 17 and cylinders 6, 6<SP>1</SP> of a disc brake. Air pressure due to aircraft speed, acts through pitot head 2 to operate bellous-diaphragm 4 which through linkage 4a, 21, 25 moves bellows diaphragm 24 to change the pressure in capsule 23 and chamber 31 of cylinder 27, the other chamber 30 of cylinder 27, separated from chamber 31 by diaphragm 29, being kept at a constant pressure which can be adjusted by valve 41 graduated to represent the aircraft's gross weight, capsules 32, 33 and diaphragm 29 support a rod 34 connected by linkage 35, 38 to the plunger 37 of the regulator valve 12. Changes in aircraft speed produce changes in pressure in capsules 3 and 23 and chamber 31, resulting in movement of diaphragm 29 until pressure in chambers 30, 31 equalize, consequential movement of rod 34 adjusting regulator valve 12 to supply fluid at a pressure for the highest braking efficiency. The pressure ratios between capsules 3 and 23 and the linkage ratio between links 35 and 37 may be changed by nuts 44, 48 on rods 43, 47 pivoted to levers 25, 46 respectively, the nuts being graduated to represent the lift coefficient and runway coefficient of friction, respectively, and are adjusted by the pilot. Antiskid apparatus 51, 50, 52 may be used to operate a valve 53 to release fluid from cylinders 6, 6<SP>1</SP> on skidding.
