Abstract

601,002. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. MEREDITH, F. W. Oct. 5, 1938, No. 28884. [Class 135] The elevators of an airplane are regulated automatically to maintain the pitch of the plane by a servomotor 19, the piston 16 of the control valve of which is operated through a lever 17 pivoted to a spring-loaded link 15 connected to a metallic bellows 10 supplied with pressure fluid, e.g. air, through a restricted pipe 11, the pressure in the bellows being regulated by a valve 5 loaded by a diaphram 2 one side of which is exposed to static pressure through a pipe 13 and the other to the pressure in a compartment 8 of a box 1 connected by a restricted tube 9 to a compartment 7 connected by a pipe 12 to the usual Pitot tube. The compartments are separated by a diaphragm 3 coupled to the diaphragm 2. The servomotor piston is connected to a follow-up lever 22 pivoted to the adjustable control valve cylinder 20 so as to restore the relative positions of the piston 16 and the cylinder after displacement of the piston. The end 23 of the lever is connected to the piston of a dash-pot 24. The spring 14 loading the link 15 is, e.g. of the kind described in Specification 476,671, [Group XXXVII], in which the stiffness is proportional to the load. In a modification, in which only Pitot or static pressure is employed, the diaphragm 2 is replaced by an evacuated capsule, one side of which is anchored to the box 1 and the other to the diaphragm 3.
