Abstract

816,509. Combustion chambers; cylinder ports. LANOVA A.G. Jan. 20,1956 [March 14, 1955], No. 1960/56. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) Fuel is injected into a combustion chamber 24, Fig. 2, in which the air swirls about the axis of the chamber in at least two jets of which the primary jet 31, of high penetration, is injected in the direction of swirl close to and parallel with the chamber wall and the secondary jet 32 of low penetration is injected directly towards the chamber axis. The combustion chamber 24 may be situated in the piston or in the cylinder head and the jet 32 may be directed towards the centre of the combustion chamber or towards the part of the axis thereof near the combustion chamber mouth. In Fig. 2 recesses 34, 35, are provided into which additional jets 36, 37 are injected. The air entering the cylinder is caused to swirl by a mask 27 on the inlet valve 26 or, in the case of piston-controlled ports, by a tangential arrangement of the inlet ports 26, Fig. 6. In Figs. 13 and 15 the air enters from. a circular supply passage 26 through tangential ports 26<SP>1</SP> and exhaust valves 25 are provided in the chamber 24.
