Abstract
816,450. Automatic couplings for railway vehicles. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Feb. 26, 1958 [Feb 26, 1957], No. 6445/57. Class 103(5) An automatic coupling for a mine car and so on comprises a casing 10 having a buffing race and an aperture 101, a member 11 provided with two face cams 12 and rotatable within the case by means of a handle extending through the case, a dolly 13 reciprocally mounted in the member 11 and located by a transverse bar 14 and a spring 15, and a pivoted catch 16. From the coupled position shown in which the dolly 131 of a similar coupler is engaged with the catch 16, rotation of the member 11 rotates the catch 16 clear of the dolly 131 and at the same time the dolly 13 is rotated clear of the opposing catch. When the bar 14 on the member 11 engages stops 21 formed inside the casing 10 after the dolly has turned about 70‹, further rotation of the member 11 causes the bar 14 to ride up the cams 12 and retract the dolly 13 into the casing, and a shutter 19 integral with the member 11 moves to prevent the dolly of a mating coupler left in the coupling position from catching inside the buffer face.
