Abstract

Thermosetting resin, previously foamed, is introduced into a moulding space confined wholly or partly by porous fabric and is cured therein to form, either a moulded article with a fabric covering or an insulation covering on a surface. Cushions are made by forcing the foamed resin into a fabric mould, through an opening for the purpose or through the fabric itself. Articles, already packed or not, may be previously introduced so that they become encased in porous resin with a fabric shell. (see Group XVII). Plates are made (see Group VIII) by spraying the foamed resin between two spaced moving fabric webs. Flat surfaces are insulated (see Group X), either by covering the surface with fabric and spraying foamed resin so that it passes through the fabric and lifts it off the surface or by stretching the fabric at a distance from the surface and introducing foamed resin through an opening or spraying it through the fabric. Pipes are insulated (see Group XXVIII) by surrounding the pipe with a fabric hose to leave an annular space and spraying or otherwise introducing resin into the space. A suitable resin solution is an aqueous solution of a urea-formaldehyde condensation product, containing a wetting agent and an acid catalyst for the curing reaction, which has been foamed up by air or other neutral gas. Suitable materials for the porous fabric are jute, glass or synthetic resin fibre, paper, or wire. The resin is cured either at room temperature or by the application of heat. Where suitable an outer covering may be added e.g. of gypsum, cement, sheet metal, roofing paper or plastic foil.
