Abstract
1,117,021. Coating apparatus. A. K. BAKER. 13 June, 1966 [12 March, 1965], No. 10507/65. Heading B2L. [Also in Divisions B5 and B7] Hollow bodies, such as masts or other structural elements, are made by applying longitudinal reinforcements to a core progressively from one end to the other whilst simultaneously impregnating the reinforcement with resin and curing the resin, by heat if necessary. The core itself may be moulded and may be retained within the finished article or removed therefrom. In the example shown in the figure, in which a mast for a sailing ship is made, a pre-moulded core I is vertically suspended between the ceiling and the floor and is surrounded by glass reinforcement rovings 14 which are anchored at their lower end to ring 15 and their upper end to take off spools 16. The rovings pass over a spider 20 which arranges them correctly, and then through a resin bath 22 carried by a frame 8, which frame may be raised by a winch 13 and cable 12. The lower end of bath 22 comprises an elastic sleeve 23 which presses against the core, this pressure being aided by an inflatable ring 24, if required. In operation the frame is raised progressively over the whole length of the core so that the reinforcements are progressively impregnated, laid and pressed against the core, helical windings 28 and outer cellophane sheets being added if required. If heat hardening is necessary the core may be suitably heated or the frame 8 may carry a dependent heating ring 27 which moves upwards with and below the frame.
