814,537. Cooling cylinders. MACKERLE, J. Feb. 24, 1956 [Aug. 8, 1955], No. 5795/56. Class 7(2) In an engine having on one side only a casing 11 with a connection (not shown) to a suction fan, the casing 11 has an opening 6 directing air on to the side of the engine shielded from the main air flow. As applied to a multi-cylinder engine, a respective opening 6 directs air on to the vicinity of the exhaust valve 3 of each cylinder, where a central gap between inter-cylinder baffles (not shown) is widest. In a modification, the opening 6 is a cutaway portion of the mainly horizontal finning of a cylinder head, adjacent the casing 11, the opening being partitioned by auxiliary vertical fins projecting laterally from the head.
