Abstract
A tape having improved dimensional stability and high strength is prepared by stretching a tape, having a basis of cellulose acetate of combined acetic acid content of 60 to 62 per cent, beyond its elastic limit, e.g. by 15-25 per cent or until the yield point of the material is within 5 per cent of its breaking strength, preferably at an elevated temperature, e.g. 60 to 100 DEG C., and allowing the tape to cool while in the stretched condition. The tape may be made by casting a solution of the cellulose acetate and a plasticizer in a mutual solvent, e.g. methylene chloride, alone or in admixture with a lower aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, or a mixture thereof, on a suitable surface, e.g. a casting wheel, allowing the solvent to evaporate and stripping the film from the surface. Suitable plasticizers, which may be present in a proportion from 10 to 20 per cent by weight of the cellulose acetate, are triphenyl, trichlorethyl or cresyl diphenyl phosphate, or dibutyl or dimethoxyethyl phthalate.
