Abstract
Polymers of vinyl esters of fatty acids are obtained in powder form by spray-drying an aqueous dispersion of the polymer containing a plasticizer and a dissolved cellulose ether or salt of a water-soluble cellulose ether acid. The powders are non-sticky and can easily be reconverted to aqueous dispersions. The cellulose ether compound may be introduced during polymerization of the vinyl ester. Specified cellulose compounds are methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose and sodium cellulose glycollate. The preferred proportions of these compounds is 0,1 to 5% of the weight of resin and plasticizer. Polyvinyl acetate and propionate are specified resins with dibutyl phthalate as plasticizer. In one of the examples, the polymerization is described of vinyl acetate in aqueous dispersion containing methyl cellulose, sodium persulphate and sodium phenyl phenolate, the dispersion then being plasticized and spray-dried at 90 DEG C. Spray-drying may also be effected at lower temperatures under reduced pressures, and in an atmosphere of protective gas.
